Eye diseases and protection // Myopia // Presbyopia

Preface

The eye is an organ that helps in the perception of light. The eyes are the first to contribute when the body is hit. In the last post we looked at diabetic retinopathy, cataract and amblyopia. Here we will look at other Eye diseases and protection, Myopia and Presbyopia.

Refractive errors

Refractive errors are caused by the change in the shape of the eyeball or the lens of the eye. The main reason is the adjustment of the focal length. The refractive errors are mostly not age-related, but there are some age-related refractive errors. Let’s take a look at some of them now.

Eye diseases and protection // Myopia // Presbyopia

Nearsightedness (Myopia)

Nearsightedness – a person with this condition can only see objects that are close to them, but not objects that are far away. When light falls on an object, the reverse image of it should fall through the lens onto the retina so that we can see and interpret the object. However, in a patient with myopia, the image falls in front of the retina. The reason for this is the excessive curvature of the lens.

Most often, it affects people in their early teens, but some are affected in old age. The cause is actually still unknown and it is also said that in some cases it can be hereditary.

The correction is done by a minus lens [concave lens].

Farsightedness

Farsightedness – a condition in which the person can clearly see only the distant object, but not the objects that are closer. The image of the object falls beyond the retina, making it difficult to focus. This is usually due to genetics. The images that are close are completely out of focus. Environmental conditions also contribute to this condition.

Correction of this condition is done by using the plus lens [convex lens].

Presbyopia

Presbyopia – a condition that occurs only between the ages of 35 and 50. As the name suggests, it is farsightedness. The flexibility of the cornea and lens decreases with age, which eventually leads to poor focusing of light on the retina.

Astigmatism

Distance does not matter, everything they see is out of focus for them. Light is deflected more than it should be. The shape of the eye changes completely, it looks like a sphere.

Symptoms of refractive errors

  1. Headaches
  2. Eye squinting
  3. Straining the eyes
  4. Shortened attention span
  5. The near objects appearing clear
  6. The object far seems blurry and unfocused

Age-related macular degeneration

A condition in which the center of vision is affected. They can no longer see the object that is directly in front of the eye, but use the side of the eye to focus, meaning the focus of peripheral vision is fine. This may start in one eye and, depending on the severity, may also occur in the other eye or affect both eyes at the same time. In people over 60 years of age, this can lead to blindness.

  • Main causes are
  • Smoking
  • Overweight
  • Hereditary
  • High blood pressure
  • Anemia
  • High cholesterol diet on a regular basis
